Let’s face it: When we see a man “past his prime” driving a sleek new convertible or contemplating making some seemingly nonsensical purchase, the majority of us are not thinking that there was a nice raise involved or a lottery winner, but rather, we assume that he must be dealing with some sort of mid-life crisis. However, this
so-called mid-life crisis seems to take the brunt of the blame when a middle-aged man decides to have some ridiculous plastic surgery, engage in a scandalous affair, or return to college for a degree in acting or art. With so many outrageous actions being taken by middle-aged men, it can probably be assumed that they have all experienced a mid-life crisis, right? Well, according to recent studies, this may not exactly be the case.
The idea of a mid-life crisis spawns from the idea that middle-aged people are driven by fear from the passing of time and their young years and the realization that they are probably closer to death than their birth. Around this age, people begin to realize that their time on Earth is most definitely limited, and they cope with this by partaking in youthful activities. By partaking, they feel further from death and closer to their youth.
Over the years, many have asked the question, “Are mid-life crises fact or fiction?” Well, research shows that these so-called crises are absolutely myths. Researcher David Almeida explains, “Very few people report having some definable crisis that’s due to their age.” However, it certainly is not fair to say that middle-aged people do not experience some sort of change in their middle years. These said changes tend to be brought on or affected by a lifestyle change, not by age alone. Stress and anxiety may lead many people to believe they are experiencing mid-life crises, but they are merely brought on by said stress. On the contrary, research shows that a larger percentage of middle-aged people are more satisfied and happy because they have found their way in life. They know where they are and what they have accomplished and found solace in their life.
One reason why mid-life crises are questioned as being real is because they cannot be defined by anyone other than us. While some believe a man may be experiencing a mid-life crisis, others may just think the person is having fun or living life to the fullest. Another reason why these crises are doubted is because, who really has time for a crisis? For most people, there are responsibilities and duties that need to be kept. Anything out of the norm may appear as a crisis, when really, it may just be for a quick little boost in life.
In the end, it cannot really be prove whether mid-life crises are fact or fiction. There are no medical or physiological signs that can explain that of a mid-life crisis. Real or not, something is going on in people’s middle-aged years, but we may never know what.
