If you have not yet experienced the natural beauty and magnificence that is Fraser Island, you should make a point of acquainting yourself with this destination sometime in the near future. I have visited many different island destinations in my time, and I can honestly say that Fraser Island was able to impress me with its
somehow unadulterated atmosphere. Fraser Island is one of those rare destinations that seems to have maintained its integrity in the face of a steadily growing tourist trade.
I found plenty of activities to keep me occupied on my trip. I selected campervan hire as a means of getting from place to place, as it seemed to be the best affordable option that would allow me to roam throughout the island to my heart’s content. My trip to Fraser Island was full to the brim with adventure, sightseeing and exploration.
Lake Wabby
Lake Wabby was my first major destination. I headed to the lake on a sunny Tuesday morning, hoping to get a taste of Fraser Island’s natural environment at its best. I was not disappointed. Lake Wabby’s waters are incredibly blue and are surrounded by a thicket of lush greenery. Catfish abounded, and I was told that freshwater turtles can be spotted there as well, although I was not lucky enough to see one myself. There were several families swimming in the shallower regions of the lake, but the area was otherwise peaceful. I took a long stroll down the lake’s marked trail; this path took me over sand dunes and around the water’s perimeter.
SS Maheno Shipwreck
The SS Maheno shipwreck fascinated me to no end. The ship served as a hospital vessel during WWI and as a luxury liner in its later years. It ended up on the coast of Fraser Island after being trapped in a cyclone, and the SS Maheno has remained there ever since. Nautical enthusiasts will adore the shipwreck, and while I was disappointed that I could not jump on board and further investigate the site, I thought that the SS Maheno was well worth the trek down to the beach.
Central Station Rainforest
Fraser Island’s natural beauty lies not only in its marvelous beaches, but also in its extensive rainforests. The Central Station Rainforest is bursting with enormous kauri evergreen trees, which tower over your head and make you truly feel your essential insignificance in the grand scheme of nature. The atmosphere is cool and dark, and I felt transported to a new world as I explored the forest’s every corner.
Night Life
If you are anything like me you don’t sleep much when you’re travelling because you want to spend as much time as possible exploring the place you’re visiting. One of the best night-time activities on Fraser Island is stargazing. The sky is usually very clear and you can see hundreds of stars lying on the beach. If you are more of a social type and need to interact with people, you can spend the evenings in the local bars enjoying traditional Australian activities such as eating, playing online pokies and drinking wine.
Fraser Island is also an excellent place for meeting new interesting people and listening to great stories about international travels. Sunsets on Fraser Island are often marked by several parties along the beach. You can take a walk and see if there is a party you can join. This is also a great way to meet new people, especially if you usually travel alone. Another great thing to do is watch the dawn on one of the beaches – I recommend that you take a camera with you, because you will want to share these spectacular memories with your friends and family.
