Make Recycling Easy

Whether trying to save the planet or simply earn a few dollars, recycling need not be hard or inconvenient. Any number of techniques and actions can make recycling newspapers, cans, plastics and even electrical items easy, fun and possibly profitable.

Items and materials that can be recycled comprise a long list, but some common items that can be reused include:

  • Batteries: Batteries contain chemicals that shouldn’t pass through landfills. Disposing of them properly can be inconvenient on a day-to-day, individual-by-individual basis, but combining efforts and disposal trips can make the process much easier.
  • Plastics: Bottles, bags and wrapping materials can be reused both around the house and into new commercial products. Make sure the item is clean before reusing or adding to the recycle bin though.
  • Paper: Newspapers and magazines should be gathered separately from each other and other paper products because of the inks and dyes used, but they can certainly be recycled. Paper tubes, printer paper and wrapping paper can also be recycled.
  • Electronics: Because of the materials and elements involved, almost every part of an old stereo, TV, cell phone or computer can be reused to manufacture other products. Toasters, microwaves, game equipment and other kitchen appliances can be broken down into components and reused as well.
  • Eye Wear: Even eyeglasses and sunglasses can be recycled. Many eye wear businesses sponsor a reuse program that provides free eyeglasses to needy people. Check for used contacts recycling and include those as well.

Odds are, most non-perishable items can find new life in the manufacturing process. A little imagination and a few telephone calls to charities or perhaps the Chamber of Commerce might glean recycling efforts in your area.

Beyond Household Efforts

Make recycling a neighborhood project. Enlist as many neighbors as possible and sell the gathered materials for a community project or a block party. Give door prizes for recycling volume awards or the most creative reuse of a particular type of item.

Coordinate or join community recycling projects. Increase your involvement in the community, make new friends and give your time and effort to this worthy cause.

Encourage recycling at work. Gain permission for recycle bins for cans and paper. The shreds and strands of paper for recycling offers a cornucopia of recycled material. Make sure all paper to be recycled is shredded, though, to maintain confidentiality of business correspondence.

Schools and libraries would definitely appreciate your recycling efforts for raising funds. From enlisting school kids to the PTA to business sponsors, recycling programs toward education and literacy are always well-received!

Accomplish two tasks in one. Litter patrols clean streets, empty lots and along roadways. Sorting the trash into recycle categories not only creates a cleaner planet but also provides additional materials for recycling.

Drop-Off Options

Once you collect your recyclables, next comes dropping off the materials.

First, locate every recycle point in your city. Determine what locations take what materials and during what times.

Examine your normal travel routes: Find what centers or recycle bins you can accommodate easily. Enlist the help of friends, co-workers, church members or family that can transport the materials on your behalf to points that aren’t always convenient for you.

If you gather a lot, perhaps borrowing a truck or a van can provide additional transport space to reduce the number of trips recycling may incur.

If recycling certain items are required by a city that charges for pick-up, delivering your own recycle materials may reduce that sanitation charge; some recycle donations may qualify for tax deductions as well, giving additional levels of financial benefit.

Summary

Whether through increased business profiles or personal satisfaction, recycling used materials helps everyone, boosts morale, provides funding streams and creates a solid sense of well-being. Go green: Tailor a fun contest or project and share the benefits! Help your community earn the title of the Greenest, Clean Town in America!
