The topic of brain health is a very important area of study when it comes to medicine. Through the years various studies and tests have found some very interesting things about
the human brain and as time goes on there will undoubtedly be more discoveries. Most recently a group of researchers successfully found a connection between brain health and walking speed in many people.
The study was focused primarily on older people and how much oxygen reached their brain, but researchers say the results apply to most people. The study found that people who walked at a fast pace were seeing higher levels of oxygen in the brain and as a result they were more likely to have long term health benefits. Higher oxygen levels are closely linked to memory function as well as other crucial brain functions so it is quite clear that higher oxygen levels are a good thing when it comes to the brain.
Amazingly it really doesn’t take much to make a difference according to the researchers. Walking briskly three or four times a week will generally lead to a noticeable increase in oxygen flow to the brain and as long as the same three to four times per week routine is maintained it will continue. Of course there are other ways for you to increase the oxygen flow to your brain such as more intensive exercise but obviously for some people this is not an option. Because the research was conducted primarily for people over 60 years old it is quite good news to know that walking alone really is enough to promote brain health.
Walking briskly not only helps increase oxygen flow to the brain it also has a few other health benefits. Like most exercise brisk walking can lead to a drastic reduction in blood pressure which is once again good for the brain as well as the heart. This is again very good news for seniors because they are able to give their bodies the care required without needing to do more intensive exercises that may be difficult or impossible for them.
The only bad thing that came out of this study is the fact that the exact details still are unknown. Researchers reportedly are still not exactly sure why such light exercise is able to create such a significant increase in blood and oxygen flow. Further studies are planned with various other groups of the population to see if the results are equal for men and women regardless of age. No word on when these follow up studies will begin but the results will undoubtedly be quite useful. As mentioned the mysteries of how the brain works and what it requires truly are still being discovered. Brain research is still ongoing and through technological advances and other recent discoveries more and more information is being determined about the brain but there is still quite a ways to go before we will truly understand how the brain works.
At this time however it is simply good news that any brain research is making progress. The more researchers uncover about the brain the better the chances are that medical and health advancements will be made. Each brain study uncovers something that will eventually be used in medical testing which could in some way lead to some serious medical advancements. Only time will tell how much knowledge there is to unlock in the brain but through the rigorous brain testing that is currently underway researchers are sure to start discovering some groundbreaking things about how the human brain functions and what can be done to improve its functions.
Paul is a med student who has been fascinated by the brain for years and as a result is currently working on numerous brain health projects. Among them is a Danish project called hjernen which reports about the wonders of the human brain.
