If you’ve recently acquired an antique vehicle, you may be wondering how to go about insuring it. How you do so differs slightly from insuring a modern vehicle. There are factors to consider when insuring an antique vehicle that don’t come into play when insuring the car that you drive every day.

1. Will it be driven?

Before you insure your antique vehicle, you must decide whether you will be driving it or not. Your insurance needs may change in the future but for now, whether or not you will be using your vehicle to commute back and forth is a top consideration in choosing the company you will use.

Classic car insurance premiums are often very affordable and will cover the cost of your restored vehicle. If you plan on driving your classic car just as you would your modern vehicle, you’ll have to go with the same type of insurance company that you’re using for the car currently being driven by your family.

2. What modifications have you made?

If you decide that you will be using your classic car to drive back and forth to work, to school or simply for pleasure, be sure to list the renovations or modifications you’ve made. If you tell your insurance company that you have a 1969 Chevelle, they may not value it at what it’s really worth.

Make sure that you tell your insurance agent that you’ve added new tires, renovated the vehicle and put in a new engine if you have. You’ll want to make sure that the total financial loss of your vehicle is covered should you be involved in an accident.

3. Can you live with a limit?

Many auto insurance companies put a limit on the miles driven per year for classic autos. If you can limit yourself to less than 5,000 miles per year, go with a classic car insurer rather than a typical auto insurance agent. You’ll find that your miles are limited in the same manner when you apply for historic license plates!

If you cannot abide by this limited mileage, you’ll need to stick with regular plates and a typical insurance company. Do be aware that your car will not be insured for what it’s actually worth after modifications. A typical auto insurer will only cover your car for its value before restoration.

Restoring classic cars can be a great hobby that the whole family can enjoy forever. If you are planning on limiting the amount of driving you do to small commutes and trips to car shows, classic car insurance is the way to go. If you plan on using your classic car as your main source of transportation, you’ll need to insure it with a standard policy. You do need to be aware that a standard policy will not offer enough coverage should your classic car be totaled in an accident.

Payment protection insurance gives consumers the opportunity to remain financially responsible and stable despite difficult times. When one obtains a loan or financial service from a lender, he or she will likely be presented with some form of payment protection insurance. There are three main forms of payment protection: loan, mortgage and income.

Figure Out What Is Affordable

Lenders often coerce consumers into purchasing loan protection by adjusting the interest rates. When factoring in the cost of insurance, however, the cost may not actually be any lower. Consumers should make sure that they are factoring in all costs before agreeing to this coverage.

Shop Around For Good Deals

More than likely, lenders will be the first to present homeowners with the option to purchase mortgage payment protection insurance. As convenient as this may seem, lenders are usually selling homeowners an overpriced service. Many are also unaware of the fact that this form of protection is completely separate from the loan. Homeowners should take advantage of this freedom and seek out less expensive options.

Increase The Amount Of Coverage

While any homeowner can receive coverage, not all of them will be able to file a claim. For example, most policies will not cover a claim if the individual was a part-time employee at the time of job loss. Because different policies have different exclusions, homeowners must read all details pertaining to the coverage to be sure that they can get a return on their investment.

Know How Much Is Covered

Income payment protection can cover up to 75 percent of a consumer’s lost income. Since most consumers are responsible for a multitude of bills, individuals should search for plans that offer the greatest amount of coverage for the best price. Consumers should also be aware of the possibility for insurers to reduce their coverage amounts.

Keep Track Of The Inflation Rate

Unlike other forms of insurance, income payment protection actually increases with the rate of inflation. Consumers should keep this in mind and report their occupations when applying for protection; this will insure that their coverage rate increases at the proper rate. It’s also a good idea to update coverage in the event of a change in job status, especially if you have just received a promotion.

The rationale of utilizing payment protection insurance is that it offers individuals the opportunity to be financially responsible during difficult times. However, such policies can also mislead consumers into thinking that they are getting a certain level of coverage other than what they actually have. It is highly recommended that individuals thoroughly explore all options and come to a decision only after all of the facts have been presented to them.

Many students that go off to college for the first time experience a bought or two of homesickness. It’s a common occurrence and nothing to be embarrassed about; no matter your gender. Homesickness can cause you to lose focus on your studies, forget to eat in a healthy way and even cause you to lose sleep. Luckily, there are some very easy ways to combat homesickness:

1. Skype

If you’ve taken a laptop to school, download Skype. Make sure that your parents have downloaded it as home as well. Skype allows you to video chat with people at home, for free, as often as you wish. Seeing your loved ones while you are speaking to them can be a great way to combat homesickness, especially if you are feeling particularly lonely.

2. Go Home

If you are close enough to home to get back there easily, plan on going home at least one weekend a month. Before you know it, it will be time for your holiday break and you’ll have an extended stay. Your parents will be as happy to have you home as you are to be there! If you don’t live close, head home with your roommate for the weekend; their parents will love to meet you!

3. Decorate Your Room

If there are things at home that you simply can’t live without, bring them along. Bring your own pillow, your favorite throw and pictures of your family and pets. Don’t forget to pack pictures of friends that you’ll be leaving behind. The more comfortable your room is, the less likely you are to feel homesick.

If you have favorite snacks, foods or drinks, don’t assume that you will be able to find them on campus. Rather than waiting for mom to send you a care package, bring these items to school with you!

4. Socialize

When you’re feeling homesick, the last thing you want to do is leave your room for some type of social event. Do whatever you have to do to force yourself to get up and out. Socializing will not only occupy your time; it will occupy your mind. Making new friends and being introduced to new activities will keep you busy. Combined with your studies, an active social life will leave your mind little room to wander!

5. Talk

As with anything else that bothers you, talking it out can be a great relief. Talk to your roommate, discuss your feelings with your RA or even call home. The more you can discuss your feelings with others, the better off you’ll be. Whatever you do, don’t let your feelings stew for so long that you find yourself in the midst of a deep depression.

It’s absolutely normal to feel homesick when you go to college, especially if you’ve never been away from home. Take advantage of these ways to combat your negative feelings and keep yourself on track. You’ll find yourself loving your new-found independence more and more as the weeks go by.

Between school and studying, it’s difficult for college students to find the time to work and make money. Since these young adults are so short on cash, it’s important for them to find affordable and fun activities to participate in and keep themselves occupied when not hitting the books.

Explore the great outdoors.

Even the non-outdoorsy types can enjoy a leisurely stroll outside. At most college campuses, a community park or quad are nearby and open for the public to enjoy. These places are great for hanging out between classes, studying, tossing a ball around, or maybe even to have a picnic with a few friends. Not to mention, many college students are health conscious and know that running or walking outside on a sidewalk or through the park is one of the best ways to relieve stress and incorporate some physical activity.

Take advantage of free campus events.

Those event fliers posted all around campus are there for a reason. One of the best things about being a college student is that there are so many free events and activities to attend. Whether one enjoys theatre and plays, sport events, or discussing political issues, a college campus is a great place to find diverse and inexpensive activities to suit any interest. These events may also serve as a great place for a college student to network and meet professionals or future job contacts in their area of expertise.

Make a difference.

In today’s job market, it’s important for recent college graduates to find a way to stand out from the hoards of other graduates. The fact is, many of these graduates will be competing for the same jobs. Volunteering is a great way to meet people and gain real world experience. While volunteer service of any kind is a noble gesture, it is important for college students and future job-hunters to volunteer in a way that is related to their college major or future profession so that it will benefit them in their job search.

Relax with friends and make new traditions.

Some of a person’s best friends in life will be those that they met in college. Even if they don’t have a lot of money, it’s easy to find something fun to do when a few good friends get together to hang out. For instance, every person could bring a food item for a potluck dinner party followed by a few rounds of poker or board games. A group of friends could even implement a weekly ritual or tradition of sorts, such as always meeting for a movie on Tuesday nights or preparing a weekly Saturday brunch.

While being strapped for cash is indeed no fun, fortunately there are ways for college students to enjoy their leisure time without spending a lot of money. Whether attending a college basketball game, volunteering time for an important cause, or just relaxing with friends and eating dinner, college students can get creative and have a great time on a low budget.

Students, do you eat when you’re stressed? Do you find yourself reaching for a bag of chips at the end of a hectic day? If so, you’re doing double damage. Not only are you not relieving your stress properly, but you’re adding poor eating habits to the mix. Exercise is a much better option when it comes to relieving stress. In fact, once you are fit, you will experience stress in a much less obtrusive way. Here are great, stress relieving workouts for every college student:

Yoga

Yoga can easily be practiced in the comfort of your dorm room. All you need is a towel, or a mat, and a sturdy chair. You may have seen people practicing Yoga poses and thought that it looks fairly easy. In actuality, Yoga can be a very strenuous workout. The workout takes focus and requires deep breathing, virtually eliminating your stress as soon as you begin.

Walking

Strap on your tennis shoes and head outside. Regular walking can reduce your chances of developing high blood pressure, high cholesterol and even type 2 diabetes. Because walking involves the whole body, tension is released from the muscles and stress is reduced in a major way. Walking back and forth to class isn’t enough, simply because your body is used to it. Try to add 10 minutes onto your commute or take a 30 minute walk after class is over. Experts suggest at least five 30-minute walks every week for optimal stress relief.

Dancing

You probably never thought that those Friday and Saturday nights out could be considered exercise! Technically, they can, but you’d do better to take your dancing skills to another level. If you enjoy dancing, take a class. You may find that your college offers a ballroom, swing or salsa dancing class that you can add to your course load. If not, find a local studio that offers classes. Dancing is a great way to relieve stress and increase your cardiovascular endurance.

Circuit Training

If you’ve never taken a circuit training class, you should try it. Circuit training involves lifting weights for a set period of time, usually two minutes, and then performing some type of aerobic activity, typically for 30 seconds. Circuit training is fast-paced and an excellent stress reliever. A full circuit will only take you 30 minutes; perfect if you are pressed for time.

Pilates

Pilates is similar to Yoga. When you are practicing Pilates, you must maintain your focus which leaves very little room in your brain for stress and worry. If you don’t have the money to join a Pilates studio, or to take formal classes, you can buy any one of dozens of DVDs that can teach you how to perform the exercises. Pilates is not only great for reducing stress but can reduce joint pain and back pain and increase the strength of your core.

Intramural Sports

You don’t have to be a stellar athlete to play sports in college. Look around campus and you’ll easily find dozens of intramural opportunities for everything from volleyball to basketball. You may not practice as often as you would if you were on a structured team, but belonging to an intramural team can give you something to look forward to at the end of a long week. While you’re playing, you’ll forget about everything that has been stressing you out and focus on your game. Sports can also be a great way to make new friends so get out there and play!

High levels of stress can raise your blood pressure, put you at risk for heart attack and stroke and affect your general disposition. Exercise is a great way to relieve stress and doesn’t have to be a hassle. Many of these exercises can be done in your dorm room, as part of a class or just on the other side of campus. Find something that you like to do and get moving!

The freshman year of college is a time of extreme life changes for most. It often involves moving away from established friends and not having nearby family to rely on. The stress of college studies combines with a dramatic change in environment to overwhelm many new students. The three predictors of emotional stability, regular exercise, dense social networks, and a healthy diet, all suffer when students face the radical break from the life they knew prior to freshman year.

Those who have experienced problems with emotional disturbance in the past are especially at risk. This is seen most clearly in the statistics. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for all college students. Most institutions of higher learning have not yet addressed this issue. Counseling and other mental health services are widely offered, and often free for students, but new students are often unaware of these services.

Even with the improved outreach and depression awareness programs being initiated on some campuses, it is important for individuals to take the initiative by taking precautions to prevent the damage of depression from ruining the life changing experience of college study. There are several tactics that anyone can use to improve the quality of life and reduce the risk of mental illness during the critical first year. These efforts may seem like luxuries that cannot be afforded, especially when every waking hour is devoted to mastering new material, but caring for your mental health can dramatically improve academic performance and lead to better health. It may also help out with the resume.

Familiarize Yourself with Resources

One of the great things about university life is the easy access to more resources than were available back home. The only drawback is not knowing about them. Cheap or free counseling, health care, and peer-led groups for mental health awareness are usually abundant. There is no shame in asking for help, and counseling is a strictly confidential affair. The school’s website, listings of student organizations, and academic advisors can all help in steering you to available resources.

Don’t Neglect Past Resources

Once upon a time, traveling away to college meant leaving behind family, friends and favorite teachers with only an occasional letter or phone call to keep in touch. Modern communications technology makes keeping those relationships fresh and active much easier. Long-distance fees can be virtually eliminated with a software phone and social networking sites can keep you up-to-date on all the happenings back home. Video phone technology is rapidly becoming a cheap option, allowing real-time conversations across the world.

Physical Health is Still Important!

Though the focus is on learning academic skills and performing strongly on tests, there is plenty of opportunity to engage in physical fitness. Most campuses have full-size gyms, which are included in the cost of tuition, and students regularly organize clubs for every common sport, including a few not so common ones. Non-competitive activities are available too, such as yoga classes, meditation seminars and even peer-led massage groups.

Exercise plays a vital role in increasing the ability of the body and mind to adapt to stressful situations. It moderates weight changes, balances hormones, and improves mood. Diet also plays a role in these, and often it is neglected. Meals are provided through the cafeteria on a schedule, and it is good to match that schedule up with study times. For late night cram sessions, keep fresh fruit and nutrient-dense snacks, like trail mixes, handy in the room.

College offers students a radical departure from the life they have known, and this puts some at risk of emotional disorders. Those with a history of problems should take extra care in keeping old relationships fresh, branching out into new ones via student organizations, and seeing to their health. Everyone will benefit from an increasing awareness of the threat and rounding out academic growth with an active social life and physical fitness program.

Are you addicted to shopping online? The convenience of online shopping attracts more and more people every day as do the great savings that can be found. You should know, though, that online shopping doesn’t always net you the best bargain. There are things to buy online and things you should venture out of the house to procure. Here is a list of things that you should never purchase online:

Pets

Search for information on dogs, cats, small animals or even reptiles, and you will undoubtedly run across sites selling pets. There are several reasons to not purchase a pet from an online retailer!

You don’t know where the pet comes from. The chances are high that you will be supporting, at least monetarily, some type of animal mill You have no guarantee as to the actual condition of the pet or that it will survive shipment You will have no insight as to the behavior of the animal and, therefore, cannot ensure its compatibility with your family.

Heavy or Bulk Items

If you shop online, chances are that you’ve considered buying furniture, pet food or other heavy items. While you may be able to purchase the item at a steep discount, the cost of shipping and handling will often times end up costing you more than the item itself. Be very careful when you find something heavy for sale on the internet. Be sure to add in shipping and handling charges and calculate your actual cost.

Makeup

If you’ve got a favorite shade of lipstick and find it online for a steal, go ahead and grab it! If you’re looking at makeup that you’ve never tried before, or trying to choose a shade from online color swatches, you’d do best to avoid the purchase.

If you’re positive that you’ve found a great deal, head to the cosmetics counter at your local mall and look at the color in person. Even better, ask the attendant to let you try it out; they don’t have to know you don’t plan on making a purchase! Only buy makeup online when you are positive that you will love the product. Once you open makeup that you’ve purchased, it cannot be returned.

Designer Goods

It’s incredibly easy to find a Coach bag or Prada scarf online. Search eBay and you’ll get dozens of pages of results. While you can often find fabulous deals on designer goods, the chances are also incredibly high that you’ll be buying a knock-off. While you may be saving money, it’s not really a counterfeit item that you’re after, is it?

Prescription Drugs

Buying prescriptions online is tempting, especially if you don’t have medical insurance. You need to be aware, however, that these cheap pills come with a steep price. The drugs found online are often laced with dangerous chemicals or, at best, fake. Resist the temptation to buy prescription drugs from any site that doesn’t require a prescription or employ a licensed pharmacist. Your health, and the health of your family, isn’t worth the risk.

Groceries

Buying groceries online doesn’t always provide a cost savings. If there are groceries that aren’t readily available in your area, buying online may be your only option. However, if you can find the same items that you are looking at online on your grocery store shelves, head to the store to make your purchases. By clipping coupons and taking advantage of in-store specials, you’ll find that you will get better deals at your local store than you will online.

Shopping online does have its advantages, particularly for bargain hunters. To shop smartly, however, you must know when you’re getting a true bargain and when you’re getting ripped off. Before you hit the checkout button, be sure that you’re getting a great deal!

Although every driver is required to have some form of auto insurance, you might be surprised to learn just how must the monthly premiums can differ from person to person. Some factors are more obvious, and include things like age as well as driving history. It does make sense that a teenage driver who has been in several accidents should pay more for auto insurance than a middle age driver with a perfect driving record. However, there are starling discrepancies in what two people with similar ages and driving histories might have to pay for their insurance. Here are four reasons why you might be charged more for car insurance.

Your Gender

Women typically pay less for car insurance than men for several reasons. On average they are less likely to get into serious car accidents, as well as less likely to be found at fault for these accidents. In addition, women are found be to more likely to follow posted speed limits and obey traffic laws. This payment discrepancy also has something to do with the fact that on average, women drive fewer miles per day in their vehicle as less women work outside the home than men.

Your Zip Code

This might seem unfair, but the truth is that certain areas of the country are more likely to have car thefts and traffic accidents. If you like in a city, you are much more likely to be involved in an accident and need to repair your car with your car insurance policy. In contrast, drivers who live in smaller neighborhoods where each car resides in a garage are bound to have fewer thefts, accidents and damage in general. However, this can unfairly target those lower-income drivers who have no choice but to live in urban areas where car insurance costs so much more.

Your Credit History

A driver’s credit rating will have a significant influence on their car insurance premiums, although in reality there is not often a correlation between driving ability and rate of accidents. However, some insurance providers believe that a poor credit rating might be a negative characteristic for a driver, charging higher monthly payments. Unfortunately this can mean that even drivers with a very safe driving history and no recent accidents can be stuck with a policy that quite simply charges too much.

Your Occupation

It might seem strange that a person’s occupation has anything to do with their car insurance payments. Unless you are a stunt car driver or long distance trucker, it should not matter what your career choice when it comes to getting a car insurance quote. However, insurance providers use an extensive algorithm when predicting the likelihood of accidents, and career is one of the determining factors.

If you receive a car insurance quite and you believe it to be unjustly high, read through these factors and determine if one or more might be the reason for your costly car insurance payments each month.

Though they only make up about four percent of the US auto fleet, semi-trucks have been identified as the leading producer of CO2 greenhouse gas emissions. This is due to a lack of regulation on two issues. First, truckers often idle their rigs for long periods, as they are used for sleeping and eating while on the road. A few states have issued anti-idling laws, but there is no indication of how well these have curbed the problem. There are more cost-effective options to idling, and these can result in significant savings for owner-operators.

Another problem is that older trucks only get about four miles per gallon in normal use. With an average trip total of 250 miles, and the fact that trucks supply goods to most American communities, the total gas used approaches 13 percent of US fuel purchases. Newer trucks are not well represented on the road, and efficiency improvements are modest with six mpg.

There are steps every trucker can take to reduce emissions and save money on the increasing costs of fuel. Some will even help prolong the life of the truck and prevent costly repairs. Newer models offer extra benefits beyond better gas mileage, but using these requires becoming familiar with technological advances.

Cut the Idling Time

Consider that six hours a day of idling over a 300-day operation will burn a total 1,800 gallons of diesel fuel. This represents costs of over $4,000 at the pump. The cost-benefit analysis for idling versus cutting the truck off was done back in the 1980s when fuel prices were lower, and it no longer applies. The ATA has found three solid reasons to stop idling the truck beyond the manufacturer’s recommendations.

* The gas spent on idling increases air pollution significantly.
* Truckers are exposed to this air pollution much more directly, since there is no air flow.
* Idling results in twice the amount of wear on the engine than normal operation.

The primary reason for truck idling is to stay comfortable during mandatory rest periods. A far more economical option is to purchase an auxiliary power unit to run appliances during stops. Even a small gas generator will be more efficient and lead to savings on maintenance and repair of the truck. In some parts of the country, a small solar unit can provide even more savings.

Modernizing the Engine

Newer model rigs provide six miles per gallon, and the savings from this can support the decision to upgrade. Another upgrade to truck efficiency is not scheduled until 2018, so waiting may not be a cost-effective option. Other advances in technology can be used regardless of the model, however. An electric block heater can reduce warm-up time in cold weather substantially.

Emissions and fuel usage in the modern trucking fleet are in excess of the much larger consumer fleet. There is room for improvement, even without federally-mandated increases in engine efficiency. Reducing emissions will also benefit truckers by saving money at the pump and on repairs.

Patrick Johnson is a finance writer who understands the cost of semi truck insurance for those with trucking jobs.

Finding a broadband internet provider in your locality may be simple as you may only have one or two choices. For major urban areas, however, choosing between the various providers can be overwhelming. The good news is that competition often drives prices down and you can be assured of getting a good deal if you shop around. Here is how to get the best price for broadband internet service:

1. What Do You Need?

Many broadband internet providers offer tiered services. Lower speeds are available for lower prices and higher speeds for higher prices. The first step in choosing a provider is determining how you will be utilizing the internet. Do you need an internet connection that will provide access to email and light web-surfing? Or do you need lightening quick access for gaming and streaming videos? Determining the type of bandwidth you require will go a long way in choosing your provider.

2. Get Reviews

Talk to your family and friends and find out who they use and what they pay. It’s not worth a low monthly payment for shoddy connection and inadequate speeds. You also don’t want to pay exorbitant rates for poor service. Ask your family and friends if they would recommend their current service or if they, too, are looking for a new provider. You can also look for customer reviews on the Internet.

Make sure that you look for reviews of the company’s customer service as well. You don’t want to have to wait for hours on the phone to speak to someone or for days when you need service. While no company can please everyone all of the time, some are worse than others when it comes to customer service.

3. Look for Special Offers

Once you’ve created a short list of broadband providers that you are interested in, scour the internet for special offers. Most companies will offer discount prices to attract new customers. Be careful, though; many of these special offers come with the requirement of a contract. You may not want to get tied into a two year contract until you know that you are happy with the service.

4. Ask for Price Matching

If you’ve found a great deal from one broadband provider, but would like to sign up with another, call customer service. If you talk to your desired provider and tell them you would like to go with them but can get a better rate from XYZ, they may offer to price match for you. It doesn’t hurt to try; the worst they can do is say no. If they do, you’ll simply need to decide if you are willing to pay a few dollars more to sign on with the company you desire.

Choosing a broadband internet provider isn’t as simple as it once was, but it doesn’t have to be difficult. Shop for broadband service just like you would anything else: do your research, ask around and make an informed decision.
